Episode 08

Postby Jeff Probst » Sun Aug 30, 2015 10:06:07 pm

So with the game at full swing and the jury starting, have you been thinking of not just surviving but winning the game?

Have you begun building your resume for the jury?

Has anything that was said or done tonight made you question your loyalties and how in control you are of the game and your destiny in it?

Today, I’ll do my confessional in a few parts – Recap, R8s, Random Tangent and Response – and I’ll try to keep myself at about 2000 words.

Recap.

Essentially, during Cecilia’s Audrey-esque rampage she made a sub-alliance with Stephannie and Rebecca and she told them to vote for Flicka to ensure loyalty. So when the vote swapped from Lilianna to Stephannie (it was the work of both Jessica and Cassandra) and that led to her being voted out and Cecilia changing her two to Rebecca and Flicka.

So after the vote happened, Flicka went to Cassandra and I and told us that she voted Stephanie, Penner didn’t vote and Rocky voted Stacy, which was kind of disproven when Rocky opened a thread.

After that the seven of us gave ourselves a mighty pat on the back and did the challenge where I noticed that – Candice was strongly targeting myself and Cecilia and Cassandra was trying to save Liliana even after her number was revealed via process of elimination.

Anyway, about the challenge – I fucked up. I chopped that challenge like poo (73). That was not intentional. That was just a massive hiccup on my part and if I get voted out tomorrow I will feel like utter shit. It would be a hilarious storyline but it would certainly be soul-crushing on my part. Cecilia winning is my worst case scenario because people will target me as opposed to her if they want to blindside Cecilia. Hopefully people think that she’s close to Jessica so she goes as their insurance boot, but whatever.

When Cecilia won the challenge we had to decide who to boot next, Jessica and Cecilia immediately said Liliana, but then Cassandra and Candice went in and tried to swoop in to try to change the majority opinion to vote off Liliana. This made Cecilia paranoid again and she is now trying to recruit Flicka+Rocky, Me+Her and Jess+Stacy to form a final six alliance and vote off Cassandra. Granted, this time it’s not without merit – and I’m fairly paranoid of them as well, but I don’t think they’ll make a move this early, so I guess it’s best to make the move first. On top of that there’s probably the Mykines 1.0 angle on the Cassandra/Liliana alliance. I also had a weird fever dream last night where I was voted out 7-4 after a challenge with numbers and accusing people, which got me so afraid when that turned out to be the challenge.

So, I’ve been talking to everyone for at least a little bit today with the exception of Penner and Stacy, who I’ll assume at this point are the perfect F3 goats. I certainly want to boot Cecilia eventually if this alliance does do well, but as of now I don’t want to get her out until Final 7 (which I will call “The Cesternino Slot”). A big fear of this is of me being Chris’d from that one season of AusStranded where some dumbass who couldn’t even read lost at the Final 3 because he made his move way too late and didn’t talk to anyone.

However, for this vote there are a few people who could be eliminated, and I will discuss the scenarios of that happening:
Cassandra – If Cecilia’s “six” works out, Cassandra gets voted out.
Liliana – If Cassandra/Candice agree to vote out Liliana, Cecilia would join them and the Hestur/Mykines alliance sticks together.
Flicka – If Cecilia decides last minute to stick by initial alliance lines, Flicka is voted out.
Nate – If either Cassandra turn(ed/s) on me or she found/finds out and makes a deal with all of the Svinoy 2.0’s to blindside Cecilia, but because they can’t do Cecilia they’ll blindside me.
Jessica – If the Svinoy 2.0’s have a greater sway in the aforementioned alliance, Jessica goes home

R8s

I watched Trainwreck over the weekend, but it’s not very fresh in my mind, so I’ll talk a lot more generally than I used to. Either that or I’ll completely legally download the Rifftrax version of High School Musical (Thanks Kimmi!) and I’ll watch it. I’m not sure when it’s going to download, but seeing that I have a chance of going home I don’t want to go home when I don’t do a N8 R8s.

Anyway, I liked Trainwreck. It is an essentially is a Judd Apatow plot with Amy Schumer jokes sponsored by the NBA. Just going on the observations on the top of my head, I think that LeBron James and John Cena were great in this, and LeBron deserves the Space Jam 2 gig and John Cena deserves not to be compared to potato salad. I don’t buy Bill Hader as a romantic sex god or whatever they try to sell him as. This movie also does try too hard to be Apatow-friendly plot-wise with the “romantic gesture” being completely random and it felt like it was cut-and-pasted into the script, it also wasn’t very funny as a scene. Amy Schumer does well in this, I think Inside Amy Schumer is better and it’s Amy Schumer being dragged down by Apatow rather than the other way around.

I know after this Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence are doing a comedy together written collaboratively because they are friends IRL, but that seems like the most publicist-influenced relationship ever outside of Calvin Harris+Taylor Swift and Zedd+Selena Gomez (whichever was done second). The more that I think about it from Jennifer Lawrence’s publicist perspective, this is literally too perfect right now. Amy Schumer is a female comedian with a passing resemblance to Jennifer Lawrence, she’s edgy with a similar sense of humor with Jennifer in interviews, she’s not ever going to outshine Jennifer Lawrence in anything look-wise, but isn’t ugly or anything, Jennifer Lawrence needs a new franchise now that Hunger Games is over. That’s my theory – that Amy Schumer’s popularity is due to Universal wanting to make more money from Jennifer Lawrence. When I get assassinated by JLaw’s henchmen, you know I’m right. I bet JLaw’s henchmen include the other contestants and that’s how I’m going to get voted out tomorrow.

Anyway, to the movie, I feel like if Amy Schumer had the opportunity to make the script less-Apatow-y it would be a better movie overall, there’s a lot of stuff that could be fixed or tweaked or tightened that would make the comedy a bit funnier, the movie doesn’t do the best job of balancing emotional resonance and comedic set pieces – most scenes are clearly either one or the other, but I’d say I r8 6/8.

Random Tangent.

Does having a section dedicated to random tangents make it less random? Yes. Is having a subject of a random tangent make it less of a tangent? Yes. Today’s subject: my high school clubs. I got this idea when I was talking to Rocky earlier, but the thing is that it’s pretty fucking clear by the fact that I’m playing an ORG and spend my free time writing 2000-word confessionals, I am kind of a nerd. As a nerd, I didn’t really have a lot of options club-wise in High School, I was part of the MUN club but left after the first year because shit my school takes that shit way too seriously. Like they have multiple stages of cuts, trips around the world for conferences, and two girls literally had a fist fight over an argument when I was there. They also get triple the funding than the rest of the nerdy clubs i.e. Robotics, which I took a part in for the last few years in high school. I did pretty well in Robotics, granted, I never fucking learned how to do anything remotely robotics-worthy, but I joined at the behest of my friends who were already in a team together and needed someone outside of their team to talk to. About a week later, I realized that they could all go fuck themselves and why would I help them when I could help myself so I got three other smarter guys to join and do all the work.

The first year we did pretty well, we qualified for a regional tournament in Taipei with like 25 teams from all around Southeast Asia. There was some weird picking mechanic where all the “bottom tier” teams (i.e. us) had to be picked as alliance-mates by the eight “top tier” teams to support them in the later rounds. At that point I made a Powerpoint presentation that I presented to the 8th placed team which was a group of three girls from Singapore, two ethnically Indian and one white girl, which led to them picking us, but when I came back the next year I found out that the reason why I was chosen was that the two Indian girls were shipping the only two white people in the tournament together. Fuck’en racist curry munchers.
Anyway, the second year that I did robotics was a lot more successful, we got to the top two of the same regional tournament and earned a qualifying berth for the world tournament, which was unfortunate because our school decided not to let seniors go because it took place during IB exams and we had to let some asshole juniors go. -_-.

I just realized I had just inserted a random tangent within my random tangent, of course you can’t tell by the superb quality of my writing that I’m actually just writing this as I go and when I finish a thought I start a new paragraph, but that was not intentional in the least. I was planning to bitch about how MUN wastes their money on MUN-exclusive mics and shit, An actually random tangent. Next section.

Response.
So with the game at full swing and the jury starting, have you been thinking of not just surviving but winning the game?
Not quite yet. It’s what I said earlier about the Cesternino slot where as long as I can count a handful of people who would lose to me (Stacy, Penner) I feel like I can still keep on trucking. My goal is to follow Cecilia and try to take her out at around 6-7-8ish.

Have you begun building your resume for the jury?
No I have not. Personally, I feel like a jury resume is something that gets somebody out earlier than they should. If Stephannie talked a bit less she might not be here and it would be probably Flicka who would be out right now.

Has anything that was said or done tonight made you question your loyalties and how in control you are of the game and your destiny in it?
Well, Candice as said above. Cassandra and Candice trying to keep the boot off Liliana. Oh tonight is yesterday, took me way too long to figure that out. Honestly for that tribal council, it was just Stephannie arguing, Liliana saying “you go girl” every few posts, and Cecilia and Jessica engaging them in their bullshit. I was planning to be a lot more active in that tribal council, but they just completely stole the show.
